What is Income Tax?

Formula New regime slabs (FY 2025-26): Nil up to ₹4L · 5% (4–8L) · 10% (8–12L) · 15% (12–16L) · 20% (16–20L) · 25% (20–24L) · 30% (above ₹24L). Full rebate under 87A up to ₹12L.
Old regime: Nil up to ₹2.5L · 5% (2.5–5L) · 20% (5–10L) · 30% (above 10L). 87A rebate up to ₹5L.
4% Health & Education Cess added on final tax.

Worked example

On ₹15L income with full 80C (₹1.5L), 80D (₹25K), and HRA of ₹1.2L: new regime tax ≈ ₹90,480; old regime tax ≈ ₹1,30,000. New regime wins by ₹39K+.

Frequently asked questions

What's new in FY 2025-26 tax slabs?

Budget 2025 raised the 87A rebate limit to ₹12L in the new regime and widened slab ranges. Standard deduction increased to ₹75,000.

Which regime should I choose?

For most salaried people without heavy deductions, new regime wins. If you claim ₹1.5L 80C + ₹50K NPS + ₹50K 80D + HRA, old regime may still win. Always compare.

Can I switch between regimes each year?

Salaried: yes, every FY. Business/professional income: one-time switch from new to old, then one more chance back.
