What is FD?

A fixed deposit (FD) calculator tells you the maturity value of a lump sum deposited with a bank, compounded quarterly at the stated interest rate.

Formula A = P × (1 + r/4)4t
Standard FDs in India compound quarterly.

Worked example

₹1,00,000 in a 5-year FD at 7.2% grows to ~₹1,43,075, interest earned: ₹43,075.

Frequently asked questions

Are FD returns taxable?

Yes. Interest is taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS if annual interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens).

Which banks offer the best FD rates?

Small finance banks and new private banks often offer 7.5–8%, while PSU banks offer 6.5–7%. Check DICGC cover (₹5L per bank per depositor).

Can I break an FD before maturity?

Yes, with a 0.5–1% penalty on the interest rate. Better to open a flexi-FD or multiple smaller FDs for liquidity.
